Generator Interconnections

The following information is for residential, commercial and industrial power generators who wish to interconnect safely with CL&P’s power system.

Three Types of Generator Interconnections:

  1. Certified Inverter Based Generating Facilities, 10kW and less

This type of generator interconnection is most commonly related to residential solar installations that do not exceed 10kW of AC power output.

A certified inverter is a device that changes direct current (DC) power to alternating current (AC) power and is certified to UL-1741 and complies with IEEE62.41 and C62.45. Proof of certification under UL-1741 and IEEE 62.41 and C62.45 may be required.

Refer to Guidelines below for Certified Inverter Based Generating Facilities, 10kW and Less

  2. Generating Facilities that qualify for the Fast Track Interconnection Process

Fast Track generator interconnections are related to residential, commercial and industrial customers installing an induction, synchronous or other generator(s) that produces 0-2MW or certified inverter based generators producing more than 10kW. The Generating Facility must meet the Codes and Standards and other certification requirements of CL&P to qualify as a “Fast Track” Interconnection.

Refer to Guidelines below for Generator Interconnection Fast Track and Study Process

  3. Generating Facilities that may require the Interconnection Study Process

Study Process generator interconnections are related to commercial and industrial customers interconnecting

    • A Generating Facility 2MW and larger
    • A Generating Facility that is 0 to 2 MW and is not certified and CL&P has determined that the generating facility must follow the Study Process
    • A Generating Facility that is 0 to 2 MW and is certified but did not pass the “Fast Track” qualifications and CL&P determines that the generating facility must follow the Study Process

Refer to Guidelines below for Generator Interconnection Fast Track and Study Process

STEPS YOU NEED TO TAKE TO INTERCONNECT

Step 1: Please read the guidelines below to understand how your generating system needs to be installed to meet federal, state and local electrical codes.

STEP 2: After you have reviewed the guidelines, see the Steps for Generator Installation and Application to Interconnect.
