Protecting the Environment

CL&P, along with other subsidiaries of Northeast Utilities, manages more than 7,000 acres of land in Connecticut. These lands are open for public use as hiking trails, for cross-country skiing and bird watching. Other large tracts are designated as wildlife management areas.

CL&P has a number of innovative environmental programs:

Managing vegetation: CL&P adheres to all environmental standards for pest management techniques and for trimming vegetation around our poles and wires to reduce the occurrence of outages; and we recycle much of the wood and brush at construction sites. Trail
Recycling: CL&P annually reduces, by approximately 8 million pounds, the amount of materials deposited in landfills by recycling fluorescent lamps and ballasts; sending scrap metal, including copper cable and wire, to vendors for reprocessing; and recycling office paper.
Reducing waste: CL&P has a cafeteria waste reduction program; and promotes two-sided copying and the use of e-mail and bulletin board systems. Company procedures are distributed electronically rather than in paper format.
