How does CL&P demonstrate environmental leadership?

Three CL&P work centers have earned ISO 14001 (International Organization for Standardization) certification. (PDF:151KB) ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted standard that acts as a guideline for improving environmental performance. Our exceptional performance during the audit phase of certification is a tribute to the high standards, expectations and commitment to environmental stewardship that we have built across the CL&P organization.

Does CL&P participate in any programs to protect the environment?

CL&P, through its parent company, Northeast Utilities, is involved in a number of innovative environmental programs:
The Connecticut Audubon's Eagle Festival is an annual event dedicated to the wintering of bald eagles along the Connecticut River. There is no better way to learn about some of New England's most precious natural resources.
NU's 2,000 miles of rights-of-way require careful management using state-of-the-art techniques to create stable, diverse plant communities. Studies have shown that rare and threatened birds, butterflies, mammals and reptiles thrive in these habitats. Our efforts towards managing our rights-of-way and enhancing a wildlife habitat have received national recognition.
The Environmental Community Grant Program provides seed money to area organizations that sponsor activities fostering environmental preservation, improvement or education.
In addition, NU is a corporate member of the Connecticut Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership, which leverages corporate, government and public contributions to protect and restore freshwater and coastal wetlands. Recent projects funded by NU include Ed Bills Pond in Old Lyme and Pond Lily Dam in New Haven.

How is CL&P managing PCB equipment?

To minimize the risk of spills, CL&P has undertaken a 10-year program to remove PCBs from equipment by replacing transformers in vaults, schools, residences and other locations.

What does CL&P do to manage vegetation and recycle materials?

CL&P has a number of innovative environmental programs:
Managing vegetation: CL&P adheres to all environmental standards for pest management techniques and for trimming vegetation around our poles and wires to reduce the occurrence of outages; and we recycle much of the wood and brush at construction sites.
Recycling: CL&P annually reduces, by approximately 8 million pounds, the amount of materials deposited in landfills by recycling fluorescent lamps and ballasts; sending scrap metal, including copper cable and wire, to vendors for reprocessing; and recycling office paper.
Reducing waste: CL&P has a cafeteria waste reduction program; and promotes two-sided copying and the use of e-mail and bulletin board systems. Company procedures are distributed electronically rather than in paper format.
