What can I do to reduce my energy consumption even more?
We encourage you to use energy wisely year-round. Here are just a few energy-efficiency tips:
Lower your home's thermostat in winter...
to 68 degrees and raise it in summer to 78 degrees. Or install a programmable thermostat to make the adjustment for you automatically. You could save 10 to 15 percent on your heating and cooling costs. |
Look for the ENERGY STARŪ label...
when you buy lighting, appliances, electronics, and heating and cooling equipment. The energy bill savings will more than pay for the extra cost of the products over their lifetime. |
Replace incandescent light bulbs...
with compact fluorescents (CFLs) that last 10 times longer. Changing just one 100-watt bulb to a CFL can save you more than $90 per light on electric bills over the bulb's lifetime. |
Check that your fridge door is airtight...
by closing a dollar bill halfway in the door. If you can pull the bill out easily, you may need to replace the seal. Your refrigerator accounts for up to 25 percent of your electric bill.
Check for drafts around windows and doors...
and apply caulk or install weather-stripping. Install foam gaskets behind outlet covers. You can save up to 10 percent of heating or cooling costs by insulating and sealing ducts.
