Reliability Improvements

Reliability ImprovementsWe at CL&P are dedicated to keeping the power on. Reliable transmission and distribution of power is our full-time commitment, with projects designed to increase the capability and dependability of our systems. In addition, we continually manage vegetation near power lines and are always working to ensure that our system can meet the demands that are put on it. These proactive measures mean greater reliability.

  • Every year, CL&P upgrades and strengthens its infrastructure across the state to reduce the possibility of service interruptions, especially during summer's peak demand.
  • In early July 2012, CL&P filed a five-year, $300 million infrastructure hardening plan with the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA). The plan consists of three important elements: tree trimming, electrical hardening (making wires less vulnerable to interruption) and structural hardening (strengthening poles, crossarms and related equipment). This investment will benefit our customers by improving the day-to-day reliability of our system and making it less vulnerable to outages due to extreme weather. More than half of the plan’s proposed expenditures will target tree trimming, as trees remain the number one cause of outages.
