Steps for Generator Installation

Certified Inverter Based Generating Facilities, 10kW and less:

The Application Process:

A complete application package consists of the following components and must be submitted via mail to CL&P:

Contingent Approval Process:

  • CL&P will review the application components to ensure that the Generating Facility can be interconnected safely and reliably.
  • If the Generating Facility can be interconnected safely and reliably, CL&P will return the “Contingent Approval” to interconnect the Certified Inverter Based Generating Facility within 15 business days. Installation of the facility may begin upon receipt of the Contingent Approval.
  • CL&P will initiate the net meter installation for qualifying customers at the time the Contingent Approval is sent.
  • If the Generating Facility cannot be safely interconnected, CL&P will notify you in writing.

After Installation:

  • Schedule a final building inspection to obtain the Municipal Electric Inspector’s approval.
  • Return the copy of the Municipal Electric Inspector’s approval to CL&P.
  • CL&P will schedule and perform the Commissioning test.
    • Within ten business days after receiving the Municipal Electric Inspector’s approval, CL&P will schedule and perform the Commissioning Test. You cannot operate your generating facility until the Commissioning test has been performed and Witnessed by CL&P or CL&P waives the Commissioning Test and the appropriate meter (if applicable) is installed.

Successful Interconnection/Approval to Energize:

  • Upon successful approval of the Commissioning Test and completion of the net metering installation (if applicable), CL&P will notify you in writing approving the interconnection.
    • For Generating Facilities that meet the Fast Track and Study Process, qualifications refer to the appropriate Generator Interconnection Guidelines.

One Line Electrical Schematic

Key Elements to illustrate are:

  • The utility voltage at the main panel (three- or single-phase)
  • The fuse symbol and size at the main panel feeding the inverter
  • The number and location of inverters with the manufacturer's name, the model number, and rating
  • The location of the utility revenue meter
  • The location of the isolation device
  • Title Block that includes but is not limited to, customer's name, address, and revision number of drawing if applicable
  • Conventional symbols should be used to illustrate the inverters, circuit breakers, switches, fuses etc.(Refer to CL&P I&R Guidelines)

Site Plan

Key Elements:

  • The location of the site structures, metering, and transformer
  • The location of the AC Disconnect Switch with relationship to the CL&P meter
    • It must be clearly identified if the AC Disconnect Switch is not located within 10ft of the CL&P meter
